Autumn Term Starting Notes
Hi Anyone, this is a post about this website itself and other student led activities in the coming year.
Firstly design&interaction:
- Should this site still exist?
- How can this site stay relevant if it should exist?
- If not what reasons are given for wanting it to end? and should something else exist?
- Who will work on it?
Secondly Book Club:
James White has been given the responsibility of the Book Club and is going to continue the club after the 26th October Draft hand-in of Context. He is emailling people who have expressed an interest, but anyone else is welcome to come to the first meeting. Please email James with an questions:
jaameswhite@gmail.com
Finally the idea of a student activities umbrella group:
There is an idea to create a student run umbrella group that will encourage and support people running smaller groups like the Book Club. We are trying to come up with a suitable platform, perhaps a website. If anyone is interesting in helping out and working on this then please leave a comment on this post.
thanks

Hand in for Friday 11 June
Hello,
For Friday 11 June you are required to hand in two submissions:
ONE
Is a pdf of your contribution to the publication. You need to focus on what we had discussed and decided to be your contributions. You should think about the visual language you wish to adopt to communicate your material/shop location/process/tips/how to’s etc. Try not to overcomplicate your contribution, but at the same time give it careful consideration.
* Also if there are certain books that you referenced for your contributions please include those too. Simply take a photo of the book and the pages that informed you.
TWO
In a simple text document you are required to email all the resources that you have found useful during your time studying, examples of a resource:
- Books
- Paper distributors
- Fabric stores
- Printers
- Shops (bags, hangers, beads, screws, ingredients, wood etc)
- Websites
- People
- You get the picture…
WHERE
Email everything to 21publication@gmail.com by Friday 11 June. THE CUT OFF IS 17:00 PM GMT
If there are any questions please feel free to email them over to the above address. Rathna and I will be in the upstairs studios tomorrow too.
++++++++
Students that we have spoken to about interviews I will email you all this week. There will also be a separate blog post with information on the sort of help/teams we need with the publication.
Well done with the shop,
K

amazing SPOT!
so a couple of weeks ago, Margot kinda mentioned this guy who sold bags on commercial road.
THIS IS THE SHOP AND IT’S AMAZING. many thanks to Margot.
Alice and I made a trip down and it was SO DOPE. browsing is not a verb that exists in this shop because there is no room to move. the man who works there is a laugh and he’s very helpful.
sadly, it sounds like the mean shoreditch rent people want to hike up his rent which means he might go out of business. we can’t let this happen! his family has run that business there since 187!
everyone go and buy his bags! they’re so ridiculously well priced and he also has amazing stuff like sale note pads, stickers, labels etc. bagging your product in a fun bag is a good solution to packaging AND he’s a nice man to have a chat with.
it’s really easy to find, just pop in with a 10 pnd note and you’ll leave with hundreds of RAD bags!
I’ve made 2 trips in a week, i’m already hooked.

across the street from Commercial Tavern, very accessible!
oh right! pricing!
first receipt i bought 200 bags and 30 stickers
second receipt i bought 100 bags

Guest List
Hey everyone, today we managed to cut and fold 800 invitations!

I know most of you couldn’t help so now I set you a new task, be our PRs.
Get the address of people to send the invitations for the shop opening.
Be it relevant design studios, not so relevant studios or just people you like. Remember, it’s slow mail, we need the full address. You can start by checking online the address of your favourite studios, designers, bloggers, writers, mothers, anything.
Then copy and blog with the tag popup_guestlist.
“If you could all do this as soon as possible (ie TONIGHT) that would be fab!” Rachel
The opening will be on the 1st of June from 5pm to 11pm.
Thanks, Nuno

Media Library memory!
Some of you are saying you’ve run out of memory to upload pictures for your blog.
If you aren’t already, you need to be saving your images for web.
1. open image in photoshop
2. Image>Image size> change resolution to: 72. Under pixel dimensions, change the width or height to the exact size you need: for example 600px wide (width of blog post). Click OK.
3. File>Save for Web & Devices and then save as a jpeg at medium or high quality. This will make the file size miniscule.
If you save all your pictures for web, then your media library quota should be more than enough.
If you have already used up your quota and can’t upload anything else, you might consider signing up for an account at photobucket.com (a free image hosting service)

About the blog and assessment
Hi Everyone,
Well done for the fantastic energy and big group effort on this brief so far! I’m really proud to be working with you.
Second, some of you are having trouble with the 20mb space cap on the blog. Because I don’t want there to be last minute frustration related to assessment, I have increased the cap to 30mb. However, we do intend to use the blog, or some form of a group blog, as you move forward on the course. So, in the medium term, you will need to think about doing a better job of compressing files and/or storing stuff elsewhere (ie photobucket or picasa) and embedding within posts.
Third, some advice about assessment. Remember that your blog forms part of your assessment evidence. We will be considering posts that you’ve made up until the hand in but ignoring posts (for marking purposes) that you make after. The blog entries will help us put the object and the photo you are submitting into a context so make sure you get everything that you need to say articulated clearly. Also, I suggest that everyone, in addition to turning in a printed photo, posts that photo on the blog, with some concluding reflections on your work throughout the entire unit. This is an opportunity to communicate the kinds of things to us that you might have conveyed in your presentation in previous terms. It will also ensure that your blog isn’t ‘dangling’ and that it is well connected up with your other assessment evidence.
Okay, really excited for the hand in and the shop opening. You’re at the home stretch — keep pushing yourself to get the very best you can.
Best, Rebecca

Cardboard Boxes
The interior group needs everyone’s help to bring in cardboard boxes.
Any size, any kind, please bring them to college starting from the moment you read this message until next Friday, 28th May. These boxes will be used as display units for the objects and are absolutely crucial for displaying our 103 objects. We need as many as 100 boxes of various sizes.
Please bring them to college and deposit them inside design studios 1-3. Everyone please bring at least one (at least that one for your object)!

Regarding the new theme
Hello Everyone,
Some of you have been asking about the blogs new site wide theme, that has now been implemented site wide. Groups_Webdev has been working on this theme for the past few weeks and though we realize that is it isn’t perfect we want to let everyone know that it’s still very much a work in progress.
Some information about the theme:
The following widgets are ‘hard-coded’ into the blog, meaning they will appear automatically on everyone’s sidebar: Pages, Latest sitewide posts, This blog’s tags and meta. You can add additional widgets to your sidebar as you please, these will appear above the hard-coded ones. To make the sidebar more ascetically pleasing I suggest everyone have a look at their widgets and remove the duplicates. (:
Additionally, every blog now has a header that links back to the homepage, to help facilitate a more community ‘feel’. I also suggest that everyone title their blog, as the title is the only way to return back to that blogs mainpage from a post.
Please leave feedback in the comments.
Now that everyone has had a few days to get accustomed to the new theme we would like to hear some feedback about how it’s working. Please only constructive criticism, we are try to make this theme work for everyone.
Thanks.
